A whopping 1.8 million people across all age groups rolled out their yoga mats to take up The Art of Living's challenge: Performing 108 Surya Namaskars during Yogathon 2014.

This comes close on the heels of the United Nations declaring June 21 as International Yoga Day. Aimed at promoting the health benefits of yoga, the event was held at 3,380 locations in 28 states - from schools to colleges, parks, stadiums, prisons, rehabilitation centres, malls, orphanages and clubs.

In Karnataka, the event was organized in 200 venues with close to 40,000 people participating from diverse backgrounds.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder, The Art of Living, said: "India is the land where yoga was born and it must finally take the responsibility of spreading it everywhere, starting from classrooms. This will help youngsters move away from violence."

Educational campuses across the country met the challenge with great fervour, with 2,050 schools and colleges participating. Art of Living teachers and volunteers led the Yogathon initiative.
