Habitual offenders and criminals who are lodged in Parappana Agrahara Central Jail may become fluent in the English language along with computer knowledge, which can be helpful in landing up a job and leading a good life after their release from the jail.

The duration of the project is 15 days. It targets habitual offenders in the age group of 20-35 years. Each batch will consist of 50 members.

The Smart Prison programme is not just a 15-day event; follow-up sessions will be held once a week for two months after completion of the training. The follow-up sessions will be held strengthen the skills acquired in the 15 days.

The spoken English and computer literacy classes will also be conducted for five days in a week in these two months to make them ready for employment after they are released from the prison.

Deputy inspector-general of police for prison administration, S Ravi, said that the programme would target habitual offenders. He said most of these people commit offences after they are released from jail and become involved in anti-social activities. He said this kind of programme can change their mindset about society and life. They may be reformed and lead a normal life after their release.

He added that at present, the first batch of prisoners was undergoing training in the jail. The Smart Prison initiative may be extended, depending on the result of the first batch.

Another officer said that the Art of Living Foundation and the prison department would arrange for placements for the talented prisoners who successfully complete their session after their release.

In this period, the inmates will be trained in not only language and computer skills, but also in life skills.
