Banglore, India (AHN) – India on Saturday marked World Heath Day in a different way when more than 1.29 million heath conscious people came together in an event called “Yogathon.”
Saluting good health with 108 rounds of “Surya Namaskars,” the Art of Living Foundation’s (AOL) initiative attracted yoga enthusiasts from ages 8 to 80 at more than 2,200 locations across 26 states, four Union Territories and 429 districts in the country.
Surya Namaskar (Salutation to the Sun) is a series of 12 yoga exercises performed in a sequence. It not only provides a good cardio-vascular workout but also keeps the mind calm and the body in shape.
The entry-free event was organized at 1,800 venues, including parks, schools, colleges, stadiums, orphanages, prisons, rehabilitation centers and clubs across the country. More than 24,000 participants took part in the event in Bangalore alone, where the foundation is based. Thousands of prisoners in 48 jails, including 3,800 in Delhi’s Tihar jail, took part in the event.
In a statement, AOL said that the purpose of Yogathon was to create awareness about ancient yoga science and its benefits to people.
“When a society is free from crime and violence and has respect for diversity, it is healthy,” said Art of Living founder, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. “Similarly a body which is flexible and can adapt to different conditions is healthy. The signs of good health are an intellect which is free from inhibition and arrogance, a heart which is full of compassion is healthy, a confusion-free mind, a trauma-free memory and a sorrow-free soul.”
The foundation distributed certificates to winners of the Yogathon challenge of 52 pairs or 108 rounds of Sun Salutations.
