MUSCAT: A Yogathon organised by the Art of Living Foundation will be held on May 11 as part of the Yoga for Health Festival, an initiative of the Art of Living, Gulf and Middle East. The build-up to the event, involving teaching and training participants the 12-pose yoga sequence, starts on April 7, World Health Day.
“Four sessions will be held throughout the day - a special one will be held at 8pm for those who wish to join after office hours - at the Art of Living Centre in Mosaic Towers, near Zakher Mall, in Al Khuwair,” Rajive Ahuja, head of corporate communications, Khimji Ramdas, told Oman Tribune in an interview.
“Yogathon is an ‘entry-free’ event aimed at building a healthier Gulf/Middle East region for today and tomorrow,” Ahuja said. “This Yogathon event, proposed to be held for people from all spheres of life, will help in reducing stress, bring in freshness, and provide the excitement of accepting a healthy challenge.
“If you are pressed for time and are looking for a single mantra to stay fit, yoga provides the answer in the form of a 12-pose yoga sequence that can be done in 15 minutes. It provides a good cardio-vascular workout, keeps the body in shape and the mind calm.”
On the health benefits of yoga, Ahuja said: “Yoga experts say doing 12 sets of a 12 -pose yoga sequence is like doing 288 powerful yoga asanas in a span of 15 minutes. The asanas massage, detoxify, and stimulate almost every organ of the body and bring suppleness to the spine.”
According to Ahuja, regular practice impacts the heart, liver, intestine, stomach, chest, throat, and legs - in short, the whole body. “It purifies the blood, improves blood circulation, and ensures proper functioning of the stomach, bowels, and nerve centres. It improves posture, flexibility, enhances concentration and intuition, and burns excess calories and tones the body.”
The Yogathon is for those who want to gain visible fitness. The event will present a challenge that will drive the youth and the adventurous to participate in a competition of a 12-pose sequence of yoga.
“Participation in the event will require members to learn the yoga exercises for about half an hour every day for six weeks. A trained teacher from the foundation will give the training. Organisations can use their own premises for training or come to the Art of Living centres for the exercises,” Ahuja added
The event will be held all over the Gulf and Middle East. Participants in the learning and training of the yoga sequence will get the certificate of ‘The Spirit of Yoga’. Those who complete 54 sets of the sequence (108 rounds) will be awarded the ‘Gold Certificate’.
Organisations taking part will be awarded an institutional certificate by Art of Living, which is a volunteer based NGO, with presence in 151 countries. The foundation, accredited to the UN, aims to create a stress-free and violence-free society. Details can be had on www.artofliving.org.
