If you are a green crusader and healthy food is on your mind, then worry not for Ranchi will have, for the first time, weekly organic vegetable market beginning Sunday.

The Youth Leadership Training Programme (YLTP) of Art of Living International Foundation will set up stalls every week at HEC market.

Ashim Kundu, programme coordinator of YLTP in the state, said, "I started working in Namkum block in 2008 for rural development and encouraging organic farming. However, we were unable to provide market for farmers. Then we contacted the Sri Sri Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology, a trust run by Art of Living and they decided to start organic vegetable market in five states, including Jharkhand."

Organic farming improves the ecosystem as no chemical fertilizer is used during cultivation. "Organic farms grow food without using man-made chemical fertilizers that can cause harm to the environment and wildlife and sometimes causes disease like cancer, lymphoma, endocrine disorders and neurological problems," said Kundu.

About 150 farmers have joined YLTP. The farmers have been divided in group of 10 and every team has a leader. These group leaders will bring the products to the market.

Maheshwar Nag of Saraitoli, a farmer who is now into organic farming with YLTP, said, "I have been growing organic vegetables for some time now and am excited about taking it to the market on Sunday. I hope the market will receive good response."

Kundu said within a year or two, AOL will start organic markets in every city and sell fruits too. "We are also planning to sell mushrooms in these markets and have started training women in rural areas on mushroom production," he added.
