The Sunday Indian|Issue Dated: January 15, 2012, New Delhi Q: According to various prophecies, December 21, 2012 is supposed to be doomsday. Will life on earth end? Sri Sri: No. This will only happen in the movies! According to Vedic philosophy, the world will continue. People are born every day and also die every day. This creation is spherical – there is no beginning or end. From another perspective, there is a beginning and end at every point. The world will not come to an end on Dec 21, 2012. There will not be any big disaster. Of course, there will be a big spiritual revolution. Q: Some doomsday prophecies claim to have a scientific basis. Do you agree with the claim? Sri Sri: No. Not at all! Leading scientists have ruled out the possibility of doomsday. How do you see the conflict between science and superstition? People who think about doomsday have a linear thinking. They don’t understand creation or the consciousness. Their perception is not scientific and their predictions are not validated by the ancient scriptures. Q: Do you say that all these doomsday prophecies are nothing but a hoax? Sri Sri: Absolutely, there is no basis for these doomsday prophecies. They lack the vision and spherical thinking – they all think linear. Q: Do you find any relation between astrology and these prophecies of doomsday? Sri Sri: Today, astrology seems to be a lost science. Though astrology is a science, which finds the link between the macrocosm and the microcosm, the astrologers of today do not seem reliable. Though these advocates and the media are scaring people with doomsday prophecies, you as a socially responsible Guru, seem to be quiet without uttering a word. Don’t you think it is your responsibility to come up with clear-cut public position? I have spoken about it many times in the past also. In the year 1999, there was a prophecy of half of America falling into the water. When such a fear was generated in North America, people were selling their homes in California and moving to Colorado. Then, in no uncertain words I had spoken against such doomsday prophecies. Also, in Bangalore, when a pundit claimed that he had all the reasons to see that the world was going to come to an end in 2020, I strongly condemned it. He was giving ideas from the Bhavishya Puranas and was misinterpreting it. I say in all my satsangs that such doomsday is only in American movies. It is not a reality! Q: Can you consider man-made catastrophes like the results of global warming – tsunamis, floods, droughts etc – precursors to doomsday? Sri Sri: Such calamities happen from time to time. If you want to call these calamities doomsday then such doomsdays keep happening often. 2012 is not a special year for that. You should be proactive to protect the environment and take up the initiative to lessen global warming. Q: Do you publicly condemn all these votaries of doomsday? Sri Sri: Certainly! doomsday prophecies can awaken those who are in deep slumber to be more proactive. Other than this one advantage, there is no need to propagate doomsday prophecies to create fear and anguish in people’s minds. Q: If we survive December 21, 2012, what will you do to expose the prophets of doom? Sri Sri: Doomsday prophecies should be laughed at. You don’t need to wait till Dec 21, 2012. Those who prophesize doomsday should wake up and change their mindsets. They may come up with ideas that ‘God has granted 10 more years – so it is now 2022 and not 2012'. I wish that the proponents of doomsday can open their minds to the scientific temper. Source: The Sunday Indian |
